What a great piece of writing. I am amazed by what you and Pat do both at Coyote Run and at the Russell Ranch. I really liked this line: "We need more of these farms, not fewer. We need more cows, not fewer. We need more people in rural America, not fewer." In one of my research projects I've looked at the arial photographs of the lands around my hometown of Melvin. You can see decade by decade the farms disappear. Yes, the land is still producing but as part of larger and larger farms. Our small towns prospered when we had many smaller farms. I would like to see an ag policy that encourages that kind of rural landscape once again.
You are a brilliant writer and I am so grateful for your perspective, kind heart, and intellect. And, of course, for your belief in the goodness and importance of rural America.

Thanks Michael. I always love when a historian weighs in!
Beautifully written explanation of farming and food production most Americans do not understand. Thank you.

Thanks for these kind words. There is so much goodness in rural America.
Thank you. Beautiful essay. I hope you have a plentiful summer!
Looking forward to a bountiful year. Rain has been great but threats of drought continue.
Matt, your post is so personal, full of your exquisite prose, and another remarkable read. Every time with you I learn something. Thank you.
Thank you Peter. And great job of elevating not only the signs but the people behind them.
