After what the IDP did to @DeniseO'Brien it'll be pretty hard to find a rural progressive to run for that office, so we'll end up with Republican Lite again - like Rob Sand seems to be aiming for. I agree that it would be ideal to have an independent family-scale farmer, because when the likes of Grassley and Naig call themselves "family farmers" the words hardly mean anything anymore. AND, farmers make up only 3 percent of the population right?

No one has moved the needle in the right direction for our landscape or our independent farmers in a very long time. Why not try a new approach with someone who at least is fearless in his advocacy who will inspire urban folks and environmentalists to vote for him? It's the Department of Ag AND Land Stewardship after all and works for all of us, not just farmers. As for a 15-point plan, they can work against a candidate, but they can also serve as a roadmap of values. Just my 2 cents.

Controlling my personal pessimism about voters in rural Iowa has become a major struggle. The gentleman farmer from New Hartford, who has held public office since 1958 when I was five years old, has become a caricature for a family farm which no longer exists.

It’s way past time to state the obvious. We have poisoned Eden. The overwhelming majority of rural residents have been snake oiled and carpetbagged by the imperialist forces of the agrochemical industry and outside investment bankers. Until and unless they can overcome their fear and feckless pride, progress is a pipe dream.

We must have elected leaders who will fearlessly fight to protect and defend our values and very existence. This requires holding those responsible to account for their crimes against all of us. We must demand justice to indict, prosecute, convict and punish them without impunity. Jail time, seizure of assets, billions of dollars in damages with iron clad laws preventing them from ever perpetrating these offenses ever again.

Nothing short of a crusade , enlisting other states and even countries will be necessary. They’re killing children and the bees that pollinate our food. We’re in a fight for humanity, not just Secretary of Agriculture! Please people, act like you live here!!
